Benwald, a 1998 Irish TB, is by Ridgewood Ben, an Irish stallion by the famous Indian Ridge, who stood at the Irish National Stud for many years. Ridgewood Ben is a multiple stakes winner and the sire of many stakes winners. He stands at the Willow Grange Stud in Tipparary, Ireland. Ben’s dam is an Irish racing mare named Zalewski who is by the well known Polish Precedent (Danzig). Polish Precedent has sired many stakes winners in the USA and England, on the flat and on turf.

Mrs. Anne Hennesy found Ben in 2003 at a barn in the back blocks of Ireland. She was advised by her friend and agent Claire Ryan to purchase the gorgeous looking gelding. Anne had been involved with horses almost all of her life, and had evented to Intermediate and also done Prix St. George dressage. Anne initially bought Ben for herself to event at the lower levels.

Within a short period of time, it was clear to Anne that Ben had special talent and was more than an amateur ride at the lower levels. Ben had the ability to achieve success at the upper levels, so Anne decided it would be an incredible experience to go with a professional event rider to realize this goal.

Boyd and Ben have had a successful partership so far this year. The highlight of the year was placing 2nd in the Advanced Horse Trials at the MCTA, Maryland. They then finished 6th in the CCI *** at Bromont Three Day Event in Canada.

Anne writes, “I am very happy to have Boyd riding my horse. Boyd is a very talented rider and has a wonderful way with the horse. The question of what Ben and Boyd can do together is not yet answered. Their journey will continue and we will wait and see. When Ben’s eventing career has ended, he will have a forever home with me where he will be happy and we will have fun together.”
