Virginia Horse Trials Preview

One of the final events of the year is starting on Friday at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia. Unfortunately Boyd is still sidelined with an injury, so he’s leaving his horses in the capable hands of Mike Pendleton and Phillip Dutton, and feeling lucky to have these two in his corner.  Here’s Boyd’s list of horses and his thoughts on the weekend ahead:

Wabanaki – I have been aiming Monty for his first 2 Star – L all year. He is very fit, going well, and should be very competitive.  After this event I plan to rest him and move him up to Intermediate next year. This will be a great building event to test him over a longer distance track. He should go close to winning it.

Carlsburg – after a few rocky runs, Carl is back in action. After a very good outing at Radnor last start, I will look for him to improve again this weekend.  He has been training well, and should be right in there in the final placings.  Mike may run him a little slow if the horse feels nervous out on cross country.

Bonito – It’s Mike’s first event on Bonito; in training they have really clicked. After a long layoff, it might be a blessing in disguise to run Bonito around a long format event at the 2-star level. This run will definitely build him up for next year.
Electra – We replaced Chakra with Electra.  We have been working very hard at improving Electra in the dressage. We are sending the horses down a day early so Mike can really work on getting her relaxed on the flat. She will be able to jump around with her eyes closed!
Miss Lulu Herself – Lulu has really come into form this year. This mare just oozes with class.  Mike will give her a nice run around the Prelim this weekend to gain more valuable experience.  She needs a vacation after this one as she is still growing. It should be a great finish to her season.
Long Island T – I have called in my old mate Phillip Dutton to give Ludwig a nice easy run around the Intermediate this weekend.  He will not run for the time.  Phillip will most likely also run him at Ocala in a few weeks. This will be a perfect event for them both to get to know each other. So far Ludwig loves the way Phillip rides him, and for me it is a huge favor having one of the best riders in the world riding one of my top horses.
