Another Great Night of Arena Eventing

Captain Mark Phillips and Eric Bull did another great job of pulling together the Arena Eventing course in record time at the Devon Horse Show.  The weather held off, and the crowd came out to cheer on a game group of eventing competitors.  Boyd brought Kyra, owned by Chris Turner, and Contestor, owned by Denise Lahey, with hopes to win the big prize money.

Riders had to negotiate a course of fixed XC jumps (imported from Fair Hill) and show jumping questions, which challenged rider’s adjustability and skills throughout the Dixon Oval and Gold Ring.  Kyra was having a rocking round when they unfortunately glanced off one on the XC jumps in the Gold Ring, which knocked Kyra out of the jump off.  Certainly very frustrating for Boyd and this cat like mare is fabulous in the arena eventing format.

After settling into the bright lights of Devon at night, Contestor made the top 12 to return for the jump off.  Boyd was out for the big money, but they had one unfortunate rail, dropping this pair from potentially taking the top prize to finishing just outside the victory gallop for an 8th place finish overall.

Boyd has been a huge supporter of the Arena Eventing classes, which have grown in popularity since being launched in Wellington by Mark Bellissimo.  Arena Eventing is a wonderful way to showcase our sport to the greater public and we do hope that it continues to be embraced at shows like Devon, WEF, Tryon, Central Park and beyond.  Congratulations to local favorite Chris Talley for winning the big money on Sandro’s Star, and thank you so much to all the Windurra staff and Devon committee organizers for pulling off another great year under the lights at Devon!
