Boyd and Crackers 28th after Dressage at 2017 Pau CCI4*

Crackerjack with owner Lucy Boynton Lie and rider Boyd Martin

This morning at the Pau CCI4* here in France, Lucy Boynton Lie’s Crackerjack and I tackled the four-star dressage and I felt like it was one of our best ever tests. He’s not the biggest mover but he went through every movement of the test without a mistake. He can be a handful in the dressage at times, but he kept his cool and I was very happy overall. We scored a 48, which I thought was about right, and we’re not far off the pace.

This year is a very competitive Pau: there are 60 riders in the field and some of the world’s best horses are here competing. The cross country course is truly a test; it’s a little bit similar to last year’s with lots of mounds, corners, narrows and combinations. I was lucky enough to walk the course a couple times with Ian Stark and we’ve got a plan for Crackers – essentially to go clear and as fast as we can!

Crackers is feeling raring to go – obviously it’s a long trip to get here but at the moment he seems to be in good shape. He’s a seasoned campaigner now and we’ve got experience on our side.
