Boyd Martin and On Cue Claim 2021 USEF National CCI5*-L Championship

With just one of his four entries still in the running and the top placing in his sights, the pressure was on Boyd to pilot On Cue around clear today at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event. But a single time fault would knock them out of second place, so Boyd also had to go for the time. Taking the risk of the inside line to the triple combination brought a rail down and cost him a top-three placing, but Boyd and On Cue still finished fourth overall and claimed the USEF National CCI5*-L Championship, a title previously held by her stable mate Tsetserleg TSF, who is also owned by Christine and Tommie Turner in partnership with Boyd.

After a busy afternoon Boyd took a few minutes to reflect on the weekend:

I was absolutely thrilled with On Cue today. She came out of the stall pretty tired after yesterday’s cross country and really dug deep for me in the show jumping. I had one pole down, in hindsight I could have ridden the turn better and helped her out more, but really 4th overall in a competitive field is something to be proud of. I’m very happy for Chris and Tommie Turner; having Tsetserleg not finish the event was heartbreaking but I’m happy that Cue was able to give the competition a fair shake.

Huge thanks to Steph Simpson and her staff of grooms, Brad, Jess and Sophie, and a big thanks to Silva for coming down and helping me for a couple days before the dressage.  I also greatly appreciate the help Erik Duvander and Peter Wylde gave me help in the buildup to and throughout the competition. Beyond that it’s awesome seeing all of the sponsors here at the event.

It was absolutely awesome finally riding around a big five-star again. Obviously due tothe Covid Pandemic over the past year there have been lots of challenges to get a competition of this magnitude up and running and I greatly appreciate everyone who contributed.

Now I’m heading to the airport and I look forward to getting home tonight and seeing the bride and kids and hopping in the ice bath!

A huge thanks to Boyd’s sponsors: Ariat Equestrian, Attwood Equestrian Surfaces, Bemer USA, Charles Owen, Ecogold, Majyk Equipe, Purina, Smartpak Equine, Cowboy Magic and Stuebben NA
