I must say I was a little nervous going over to Germany to ride Crackers around the Luhmuehlen CCI four star. The reality was that the last time I sat on him was six weeks ago when I got driven into the ground with a very nasty fall at Badminton Horse Trials. But at the end of the day I believe that champion horses like Crackers bounce back after set backs.

One of my good mates, Jocko Pagent, who rides for New Zealand, is a master horseman. I must give him full credit for schooling and training Crackers in England whilst I was back home in the USA. I have known Jock since he was 17, and he has always been awesome with difficult horses. Crackers is a legend of a horse, but he is very quirky. Jock cross country schooled him a few times, and reported back that Crackers was feeling super and was full of confidence. The major challenge Jock had was getting him past the sheep on the gallop!
When I sat on him for the first time on Monday, he felt better than ever.  I knew I was in business.
In hindsight, I feel I could have been slightly better in all three phases at Luhmuehlen. But saying that, in the scenario that we were in, 10th place is a great effort. I was most impressed with how Crackers dug in and went around the cross country. There were a couple of moments when he had a chance to run out at some of the very tricky corners, and he busted himself to stay inside the flags.

I must give thanks to Cracker’s owner, Lucy Boynton Lie.  Over the years Crackers has provided many challenges and setbacks, and Lucy has not wavered with her support one bit. She is a great supporter, and awesome to be around at the events. Obviously a trip like this has a huge cost, and she never once questioned my plan. You are awesome, Lucy!

A big thanks must also go to Kristen, who groomed at Badminton, and Avery, who groomed at Luhmuehlen, for taking excellent care of Crackers.  He is a tricky horse to ship, and these girls lost a lot of sleep making sure Crackers was in good order. They could not have taken better care of him.  I would also like to thank the USEF for the half grant that helped get us to England. I am very thankful that the US is helping getting their riders to the big European events.

Lastly, as the sole American rider at Luhmuehlen, I found out just how cool this sport is. Even though I was a loner, the Kiwi coach Erik walked the course with me, and gave me info on how it was riding, the German blacksmith fixed Cracker’s shoe, the English vet Liz gave him fluids and looked at his soundness after cross country, and my old mate from Australia Kevin lent me half of his tack to get me through the event.
Lastly, it was great to have my beautiful bride Silva and the young bloke Nox at the event. Without question, Silva’s support has been a life changer for me.
I am looking forward to getting home to the promised land.
