Boyd’s Rolex Preview 2016

L-R: Steady Eddie, Shamwari 4 and Blackfoot Mystery

We’ve arrived at the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park and it’s a beautiful, sunny afternoon in the Bluegrass. All three horses are feeling fit and healthy and we’re looking forward to the big event. Here are Boyd’s thoughts on the week ahead:

Steady Eddie

I’m just off Steady Eddie’s first ride here at the Kentucky Horse Park. It was surreal to be riding here; I remember when I found this OTTB many years ago in Australia and felt there was something special about him. Many thanks to his loyal owners George and Gretchen Wintersteen and Pierre Colin and Denise Lahey for standing by us over the years. Obviously this will be a huge test for Eddie but he’s in good form and has been running quite well this year. He’s definitely fit enough, but he can be a bit skittish cross country so I’ll be making some wider turns at the tighter lines. My goal is to finish on his dressage score, which I guess will be in the mid-50’s to high 60’s range.

Shamwari 4

Shammie has been in sizzling form this year. He is coming back from a long layoff after the 2014 World Equestrian Games in France and I’m glad I made myself let Shammie recuperate 110% per cent and didn’t run him last year, because he’s been sound and healthy and running well. I feel he could be in the top few on Sunday if I can really nail the dressage test on Thursday. Silva’s got me riding the canter work a lot more forward and I think if he puts in a great performance he’ll be tough to beat. She’s coming down tomorrow and will coach me through the big event as usual.

Blackfoot Mystery

Big Red has come full circle, back to his birthplace in Kentucky. He’s my final ride, on Friday afternoon, and he loves the electric atmosphere, so I think he’ll put in a great test since there should be a good number of spectators here then. He’s fit enough for the cross country but he’s never seen anything like this, so it’ll be a big challenge. Even though we’ve been hit and miss in the show jumping, he jumped super at The Fork and has been schooling well, so if all goes to plan he could be right up there with Shammie.

Here’s the Entry List, including Ride Times:
