Cross Country at Jersey Fresh

Long Island T and Boyd Martin in the CCI4*-S. Copyright Amber Heintzberger

We had a pretty good day at the Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event. It all started out this morning with the CCI3L cross country. Wakanabi, or Monty, was first out and jumped the course great; unfortunately I missed the optimum time by three seconds, which isn’t much on a 8min 32sec course, but it was frustrating.  Fernhill Prezley and Donald (Penhill Celtic) were equally brilliant.  I was slightly speedier (by 3 seconds) and got the time on both of them. It was a good test for all three of these boys and they are all starting to feel seasoned at this level.
The next order of business was Long Island T, or Ludwig’s showjumping in the CCI4S. He was brilliant, jumping a clear round, and I was thrilled with him.
Last but not least, I hopped on Luke and roared around the CCI4L cross country course.  He was very good. We missed the optimum time slightly, and I blame myself for not pushing harder at the beginning of the track. He felt good and fresh right to the end. We did have a bit of a scare when the announcer said that we bumped into a flag on a one of the corners and gained 15 penalties. Thankfully the ground jury reviewed the video and removed the penalties. Phew!  We are placed in 3rd going into tomorrow’s showjumping.
The final ride of the day was Ludwig in the CCI4S cross country. Ludwig was charged up for the first 10 fences. I decided to err on the side of caution and ride him a little slow until he settled down. I believe he was a bit buzzed up still from Kentucky.  He chilled a bit and jumped the middle and end of the course really well. Unfortunately we picked up a few time penalties and narrowly came in 2nd place overall.
All five horses look great on trot up tonight after their cross country run. My vet is here and he eventuated them all thoroughly.  Monty, Prez, Donald and Luke will show jump tomorrow after the official trot up. I think they will all jump well – fingers crossed!
