Stable View Oktoberfest 2018

The Stable View Oktoberfest CIC3* in Aiken, South Carolina was a great success. They put on their best-ever Oktoberfest event this year, with $80,000 prize money to draw some of the best riders in the business. The efforts made to make this event truly International have gone far beyond my wildest dreams! From the stabling to the arenas to the Pavilion, this is truly a world-class event.

I took five horses down there: in the CIC1* I took Helle and Scott Goodrich’s horse Ringo Star for his first one-star. It was his first FEI event and he finished a creditable 8th place and he looks like a strong horse for the future. In the Advanced I had two greenies, Chris Turner’s On Cue and Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin’s Contestor. They finished first and third respectively and were fantastic in all three phases.

In the CIC3* I had my old mate Steady Eddie owned by Denise and Pierre, and George and Gretchen Wintersteen. He roared around the course hardly raising a sweat and finished 4th. Unfortunately Chris Turner’s Kyra had a spook at a corner halfway around Mark Phillips’ course, which was disappointing but other than that she was good. Congratulations to Phillip and I’m Sew Ready for taking home the top prize in this division.

Hats off to the course designer and event organizers for opening up a huge new section of the property; the course was not so twisty this year and it had some good galloping space and was also a solid test of the horses’ stamina. My hope is they get a premier date in the winter schedule to help prime the horses for Kentucky.

We will head down to Aiken January first and I’m looking forward to once again basing our winter training program at this world-class venue.
