Steph Learning Equine Massage

For the past few days Boyd’s head groom and barn manager Stephanie Simpson has been immersed in the Sportsmassage program run by JoAnn Wilson in collaboration with Downeast School of Massage in Camden, Maine.

Steph reports:

JoAnn is by far one of the most experienced and knowledgeable Sports Therapists in the country, having studied closely with Jack Meagher, the pioneer of Sportsmassage. I’€™ve been fortunate enough to see JoAnn in action at all of the team outings as well as the Kentucky Three-Day Event. The difference seen in the horses she works on is always profound, and I have been very eager to learn a small fraction of her skills to be able to use on our horses at home. She holds two courses every year, one in May and the other in October, each lasting six days.

Our first day was spent learning theory of massage, the three techniques for eliminating muscle tightness, and assessing horses’ gaits.

On the second day we focused on anatomy and applying techniques we have been learning to work on a specific group of horses. Yesterday was our third day, which started at the Downeast School of Massage for a lecture on ethics, and then moved to the farm to work on a different group of horses using the same techniques we have been practicing.

Although this is only a very small fraction of what there is to learn, this experience has been incredibly valuable so far.
