Retraining Racehorses in Japan with Boyd Martin: First Clinic (Gotemba)

We’ve had a brilliant start to the retired racehorse clinic in Japan, hosted by the National Riding Club Association of Japan (NRCAJ), the Japanese Racing Association (JRA) and Godolphin. The first three days were spent at Gotemba in a beautiful setting at an Equestrian Center right in the shadow of Mount Fuji. We had four groups of riders each day. The first group was very green and the second and third had been jumping for a year or so. The fourth group was quite advanced, jumping about Read more...

Starting the Young Horses Right

https://youtu.be/oIq7bRNjrTg By the first of November all of the major events are done and dusted and I give the bulk of the upper level horses a good month’s vacation. This is a well-deserved rest from the hard, focused training and relentless competition schedule that starts in February. This also means a little less work at the farm since the upper level horses are so time-consuming, so we also use this time to give our staff a holiday intermittently This is also a good time to break in Read more...

Mike Pen is Off to Germany to Work for Michael Jung

We are wishing my assistant rider Mike Pen the best for the next month as he’s off to the south of Germany to work for German Olympian and World Champion Michael Jung. Mike has been a hard worker for me for the past six or seven years and this is a terrific opportunity for him. A big thanks to Felix Vogg, my Swiss mate who has also worked for Michael Jung, for helping to work out the details. This is an awesome opportunity for Mike to have an international work experience and learn behind Read more...

November 2018 Shamwari Update

My good mate Shamwari is feeling better and better since he was injured at the  Luhmuehlen CCI4* in Germany in June, when his hind tendon slipped off his hock just meters before the finish of of the 4-Star cross country course. For the first three months after Luhmuehlen he was pretty sore, so we had him on stall rest and we were hand grazing him a couple of times a day. After he got more comfortable we put him out in a round pen for a few hours a day, so he could enjoy some sunlight and controlled Read more...

US Eventing Horses Passed the Jog and Ready to Go

Tsetserleg and the rest of the US horses passed the trot up with flying colors today at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon. We will do dressage at 1:40pm tomorrow, the second to go of the US Team. Thomas is feeling great, so I anticipate a good test. The weather has been pretty warm and humid, so I’ve shortened his workouts a bit and ridden him more frequently instead of for longer rides but he’s in good nick and the rest of the team look great so I think we’re in for a good championship I Read more...

Cross Country Schooling with Ian Stark

Swan Lake Jumper Show

Yesterday I went to the Swan Lake jumper show in Western Pennsylvania with Santos, Eddie, Shamwari and Kyra and competed the horses in the 1.20m and the 1.30m jumpers. Santos - I thought he jumped really well in the 1.20. I made a mistake with my position coming out of the last combination and we had the back rail down because I sat up too early. This phase is Santos weaker phase, and I believe we are making good progress.  I feel like he is getting stronger and more careful; the Bromont Three-Day Read more...

All Six Horses Clear Cross Country at Jersey Fresh 2018

It was an outstanding day for the Windurra horses at Jersey Fresh International, with six clear rounds and two horses in the lead: On Cue leads the CCI2* and Long Island T tops the CCI3*, with Ray Price in second by fewer than three points - meaning Ludwig better pick up his toes in the show jumping tomorrow. Kyra is less than a point off the lead in the CIC3* followed closely by Steady Eddie in 3rd. Shamwari ran slow and steady around the CIC2* and is currently 16th. Here are Boyd's comments Read more...
