I'm slowly building up the upper-level horses for their spring goals: some of the horses are heading to Kentucky, Jersey Fresh and on to Bromont, and we used Red Hills in Tallahassee, Florida as one of their preparation events to get them humming along.

Windurra Eventers at Dressage at Bruce’s Field

This weekend Mike and I took a few of the event horses over to Bruce's Field, here in Aiken, for the dressage show. It was fun trying to mix it up with the fancy dressage horses and it was an especially good experience for the Kyra and Cortez, who will be competing in the LiftMaster Eventing Grand Prix at Bruce's Field in a couple of weeks. Hannah Lu, owned by Sarah Reese and Joan White, was great this weekend in the dressage show at Stable View. I just kind of changed the way I ride her, warming up with a light seat and keeping things a little loose and that works really well for her, since she tends to be a bit of a tight horse. She was really good, she placed 2nd to Shawna Harding in the PSG with 69% and won the I-1 on Sunday with 68% which was really good for her.

By the first of November all of the major events are done and dusted and I give the bulk of the upper level horses a good month’s vacation. This is a well-deserved rest from the hard, focused training and relentless competition schedule that starts in February. This also means a little less work at the farm since the upper level horses are so time-consuming, so we also use this time to give our staff a holiday intermittently

My good mate Shamwari is feeling better and better since he was injured at the Luhmuehlen CCI4* in Germany in June, when his hind tendon slipped off his hock just meters before the finish of of the 4-Star cross country course.
For the first three months after Luhmuehlen he was pretty sore, so we had him on stall rest and we were hand grazing him a couple of times a day. Yesterday I went to the Swan Lake jumper show in Western Pennsylvania with Santos, Eddie, Shamwari and Kyra and competed the horses in the 1.20m and the 1.30m jumpers.
Santos - I thought he jumped really well in the 1.20. I made a mistake with my position coming out of the last combination and we had the back rail down because I sat up too early. This phase is Santos weaker phase, and I believe we are making good progress. Tsetserleg, owned by Christine Turner ran clear around his first four-star cross country course and added just two time penalties to his dressage score for a total of 33.2, to currently stand in seventh place at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event.

In the second day of dressage at the 2018 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event, Boyd and Steady Eddie, owned by George and Gretchen Wintersteen, Denise Lahey and Pierre Colin, scored scored 38.8 and are in a three-way tie for 32nd place at the end of the day. Tsetserleg owned by Christine Turner, was nudged out of his second place standing with a few dynamite performances in the top tier of the competition but he is holding on to a tie for sixth place on 31.2 in his very first four-star competition.
