We were showing the dressage horses at Blue Goose this weekend and the horses performed great, but their success was overshadowed by our sadness at the death of our friend Philippa Humphreys.
My friend Erin Freedman was competing at the show and made beautiful ribbons (pictured above) and bracelets in Philippa’s colors for everyone to wear. We have been thinking of her every day and my heart breaks for her every day.
I was lucky enough to spend a few months with Philippa and her mum Gill, who was here watching the baby while Philippa prepared for Rolex. Their horses were with us through Aiken and then here in Pennsylvania up until Rolex, so we spent quite a lot of time together in the past few months. I didn’t know Philippa that well, but sometimes you meet somebody and you just know you’re going to have a long and special friendship. I really felt that way about her.
I know we can’t make it any better for Peter and her family but I wish I could. I had a good show this weekend, and I’m happy about that, but I wish I could give that happiness to Philippa’s family, and take away their pain.
There are a lot of criticisms flying around the internet right now. It is terrible that Millie will grow up without a mother, it’s a tragedy, but I also think it’s important that we all remember that Philippa knew the risks, and accepted them fully to follow her passion. You never know what might happen in life.
Boyd and I plan to go to Michigan on Saturday, for the celebration of Philippa’s life, and we are thinking of her all the time.
With love,
Silva
